Tread

Twelve blocks of various coloured marble form a line along the gallery floor.

The blocks originated in many different countries of the world: Italy, Brazil, Syria, Portugal, China – where they were geologically formed over millennia.

On each block a foot is carved. Some appear fossil-like within the stone like evidence of human presence, others seem to step across the petrified earth. The glorious colours range from blue to black to pink to white to amber yellow...

The marble was found in the store of Studio Carlo Nicoli in Carrara. They are offcuts from other jobs, showing machinery cuts and scars from their extrication. Tread reveals the limited presence of a human on earth, embedded over the millennia of geological time, sediment and pressure.

This work was commissioned by the Tia Collection, Santa Fe, USA

Bloodlines

Bloodlines is a series of photographs of the artist's parents which are printed large and framed underneath sheets of extraordinary red-veined, hand-blown glass.

Rivers of deep red and captured bubbles hover above the series of images taken in the 1940s. A central diptych shows a man looking in one direction through binoculars and a woman looking the other way out of a window. Others in the series show her parents at full sail, yacht rigging and views through the wild Fastnet Lighthouse and Daunt lightship - life at sea off the south coast of Ireland where her parents met.
